1.7.2021-Portugal is the fourth safest countries in the world and the second among European Union countries, according to the Global Peace Index 2021.

Portugal is the fourth safest country in the world and the second among European Union countries, according to the Global Peace Index 2021 and the Institute for Economics & Peace report, only appearing behind Iceland, New Zealand and Denmark.

For the Minister of Internal Administration, Eduardo Cabrita, "Portugal being considered one of the safest countries in the world is an asset to the quality of life of the citizens of Portugal" and represents a competitive advantage over other countries. Security is now a decisive factor in capturing investment, tourists and reinforcing the country's global image. It is important to remember that this was achieved in such a difficult year as this pandemic, which in many countries has contributed to an increase in conflict and an increase in some criminal forms.

In 2014, Portugal occupied the 18th place, having been moving up the table in recent years. The significant progress that Portugal has made in security has allowed for a reduction in crime and, consequently, a gradual and consolidated rise in this ranking.
